ABSTRACT

Congenital Fibrosis of the Extra Ocular Muscles1 [CFEOM1] is an autosomal dominant condition, caused by mutation in the KIF21A and TUBB3. It is characterized by congenital non-progressive restrictive ophthalmoplegia and ptosis. Mutational analysis of the known genes in such rare diseases by Sanger sequencing not only prevents wasting the time and expenses but also speeds diagnosis process, genetic counseling, and the possibility of prenatal diagnosis. Here, for the first time, association of pathogenic variant c.2860C>T in KIF21A gene in an Iranian family with positive history of CFEOM1A was reported

ABSTRACT

This study aims at making a comparison between Ocular Biometry, Keratometry Reading and Intra Ocular Pressure in age-related cataract patients with and without Pseudo Exfoliation Syndrome. A clinical-based cross-sectional study was carried out on 118 patients in 2008, with and without pseudoexfoliation syndrome who were candidates for age-related cataract surgery. Ocular Biometry, the related components including Anterior Chamber Depth, Lens Thickness, Vitreous Chamber Depth and Axial Length were measured using an A-scan ultrasound device. Corneal Power and Intra Ocular Pressure were also measured using keratometer and applanation tonometry, respectively. Of the 118 patient with mean age 68.97 +/- 11.02 years old, 49% were men. Mean age was 71.08 +/- 11.19 and 66. 91 +/- 10.54 years for male and female respectively. 36.4% of total patients had PXS and among them 21.2% of male and 15.3% of the females had Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome. In Ocular Biometry components, the mean of Anterior Chamber Depth was shallower in the patients with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome than those without it [P=0.049]. Also mean Intra Ocular Lens power was greater in patients with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome than those without it [p=0.046]. It seems that patients with age related-cataract along with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome need larger Intra Ocular Lens power and have shallower Anterior Chamber Depth

ABSTRACT

During the time and variations which occur in technological, demographic, economical, and cultural issues many organizations have to change their policies, procedures and rules. Quality management systems should always and continuously respond to customer's needs and requirements. Consequences of implementing strategic planning baed on quality in Imam Reza hospital in Urmiyeh was evaluated by this study. Method: This was a descriptive study on economical and statistical datas in Imam Reza hospital. Indicators like; customer satisfaction, performing tasks appropriately, variation control, reducing treatment expenditure in clinical and paraclinical departments, personnel education, quality of services, customer requirements analysis, income increasing in different departments, and increase in normal delivery to cesarean section ratio were evaluated. Nearly all of these indicators showed improvement after implementation of the project and datas are presented in detail. Implementing Total Quality Management programs in this hospital resulted in higher degress of customer satisfaction and health indicators. These programs will lower the expenditure and indeed will end into a better state of productivity of the organization

ABSTRACT

Pinguecula causes cosmetic effects and induces pterygium in some cases. Burning, irritation, lacrimation and foreign body sensation, occasional significant astigmatism and decreased vision are among the major symptoms of pterygium. As most findings in this regard are hospital-based, the present population- based study was conducted to study the prevalence of pterygium and pinguecula and the effect of population variables in the rural population of sabzevar, Iran. This descriptive epidemiologic study was conducted cross- sectionally and the population was rural residents in sabzevar, Iran. Cluster sampling was used for random sampling from 40 villages amounting to 2508 subjects. The study was conducted in 2002-2004. The subjects were interviewed and fully examined. Diagnoses were made clinically. The relationships between population variables and the two disorders were evaluated. The obtained data were analyzed using chi- square, t- test and logistic regression. Mean age of 1014 men [40.5%] and 1494 women [59.5%] participating in the study were 27.84 22.07 and 26.90 19.05 years respectively. Of 2508 subjects, 396 cases of pterygium and pinguecula were diagnosed with an overall prevalence of 15.8%; 187 men [18.44%] and 209 women [14%]. Its prevalence was higher in men than in women. Its distribution as asymmetric, i.e. OD: OS ratio = 0.64. Also, its prevalence across different jobs rendered the following results for farmers, workers and housewives: 39.5; 33.3 and 23 respectively. The overal prevalence of pterygium and pinguecula in rural population of Sabzevar is 15.7%, which may be attributed to population variables and risk factors, geographical location, climatic conditions, racial and familial factors

ABSTRACT

Background and Purpose: Rubella is a member of togaviridate viruses, with minor morbidity in children. Rubella infection during pregnancy causes various malformations including congenital cataract. Immunity against it is, therefore, important in girls before marriage and it is recommended in girls without antirubella antibody in some countries. This study is intended to determine the anti-rubella immunity in premarriage girls in Sabzevar, Iran

Methods and Materials: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 186 pre-marriage girls in Sabzevar, Iran to determine serological anti-rubella [IgG and IgM] using ELISA. NOVUM DIAGNOSTICA Kit was used for tests and SPSS for data analysis

Results: 172 girls [92.5%] were positive and 14 girls [7.5%] negative, i.e. high risk group.152 girls [81.7%] already infected with rubella were now positive and 11 girls [5.9%] negative

Conclusion: Subjects' age and IgG antibody did not show any significant relationships while a significant relationship was found between exposure to rubella and IgG [p<0.0019]; in other words, 81.7% of the IgGpositive cases were already exposed to rubella and 5.9% of the cases with history of rubella were IgG negative. Therefore, the high risk group is recommended to be vaccinated prior to pregnancy to prevent the risk of congenital rubella syndrome
